Make it with Minerals! Self-Organizing Complex Materials
Time: 11:05 am
What if we could build materials as effortless and complex as in nature? In this lecture, we explore how simple bioinspired self-organization processes already yield remarkably intricate forms. By exploiting the interplay between reaction and diffusion rates, we mineralize nanoscopic building blocks that spontaneously organize into intricate patterns with micrometer precision. Once formed, these mineral architectures can be transformed—much like a controlled fossilization—into new compositions such as semiconductors or catalysts, all while preserving their original design.
Building on these insights, we show how such conversion reactions can be exploited for the detection of toxic lead by turning lead into light-emitting perovskite nanocrystals. This photoluminescent lead detection method enables rapid detection of lead to prevent lead poisoning and supports forensic investigations. Today, the method is used worldwide by citizens, health professionals, police forces, and environmental scientists—showcasing how fundamental, bioinspired nanoscale science can translate into real-world impact.
