Martin U. Schmidt Bio

  • 1984-1991: Study of chemistry at RWTH Aachen University (Germany)

  • 1991-1994: PhD at RWTH Aachen University on crystal structure prediction of organometallic molecular compounds

  • 1995-2002: Work in industry: Head of the Laboratory for Crystal Engineering and Polymorphism Studies of Industrial Organic Pigments at Hoechst AG (since 1997: Clariant GmbH) in Frankfurt am Main (Germany).

  • Since 2002: Professor for Solid-State Chemistry at the Institute of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main (Germany)

    Research Topics:
    Crystallography of crystalline, nanocrystalline and amorphous organic compounds, esp. pharmaceuticals and organic pigments, including methods developments on:

  • Crystal structure determination of nanocrystalline organic compounds from un-indexed powder diffraction data by a global fit to the powder data (FIDEL, Fit with Deviating Lattice parameters);

  • Investigation of local structures of nanocrystalline and amorphous organic compounds by analysis of the pair distribution function (PDF);

  • Structure determination of nanocrystalline organic compounds by a global fit to the PDF;

  • Investigation of lattice defects and disorder in organic structures by lattice-energy minimization;

  • Synthesis, crystallisation, polymorph screening and crystal structure determination of organic pigments and other poorly crystalline compounds.
